Poptropica is an onlinerole-playing game, developed in 2007 by Pearson Education's Family Education Network, and targeted towards children aged 6 to 15. Poptropica was primarily the creation of Jeff Kinney, the author of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. As of 2015, he remains at the company as the Creative Director.[1]

In the game, players can go to different 'islands' (game quest scenarios), compete in multiplayer games, and communicate with each other. The islands all have various difficulties, but all center on a problem that the player must resolve by going through multiple obstacles or completing goals. All islands, upon finishing, award 'Poptropica credits' which are non-negotiable but may be used to buy costumes and special effects in the Poptropica store.

In 2011, Poptropica was listed on Time magazine's list of '50 Websites that Make the Web Great', where it was described as 'an inventive megasite for kids with a wholesome and slightly educational bent.'[2] In 2012, Poptropica had an Alexa Internet rating of 1,302 in the United States, and a ranking of 5,162 in the world.[3] By 2012, the game had grown to have over 500 million registered users, with 35 million in the 15-25 age group.[4] Versions of the game have been released on Nintendo DS and 3DS, and iOS mobile devices. In May 2015, it was announced that Family Education Network was sold by Pearson to the interactive-education venture capitalist Sandbox Networks,[5] and that Poptropica had 'over 3.2 million monthly unique users in 200 countries and territories.'[6]

In 2015, Poptropica was sold to educational-technology investment ground, Sandbox Partners.[7]

Nov 02, 2009  Reality TV Island is the upcoming quest on Poptropica. It has been marked as coming soon for a very long time, but has been repeatedly delayed for several reasons. In the meantime, many advertising mini-missions and some short quests like Poptropica Haunted House have been released, but Reality TV Island remains a mystery.

  1. Sep 02, 2012  Hey everyone, Reality TV reminded me of Poptropolis Games. Wasn't my favorite. I'm breaking the 'Road To Captain Thinknoodles' up into around 20.
  2. Jan 09, 2017  Reality TV Island is the 11th island released on Poptropica which based on the hit reality TV show, Survivor. The island was released on February 24, 2010 for Members and March 24, 2010 for non-members. To complete the island, player has to compete against 7 different people - some who are characters from previous islands, others who are new- with 7 different challenges, in order to be a hero.

Gameplay

When it first launched in 2007, Poptropica only had one island, titled Early Poptropica Island. As of 2017, it has 58 islands to be explored, all with a different theme: examples include Back Lot Island, where the player helps produce a movie, and Super Power Island, where their goal is to defeat six super villains. Each island has its own quest, for which a player can receive an island medallion as well as 150 credits to spend in the in-game Poptropica Store. Starting July 6, 2011, Poptropica allowed players to replay islands without creating a new account, while still keeping track of all the Medallions the player had earned.

Advertisements

In addition to the available island quests, advertisers contract for temporary mini-games that appear on the site, sometimes targeted to players of a certain age group or gender. Regular advertisers have included Disney, Kellogg's Froot Loops, Lego toys, and various animated movies and DVD releases. Advertisement mini-games normally appear only during a two-week period. If the player completes an advertisement mini-game, they receive a temporary prize, usually related to the media being advertised.

A few Poptropica islands are themed after certain book series: these include Big Nate, Timmy Failure, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and Magic Tree House. These islands are permanent, and can be played at any time. In 2015, a total of seven of these islands became members-only.

Mini-games

Poptropica features different mini-games that users can play with other people. These include Switch, Sudoku, Hoops, Sky Dive, Paint War, Star Link, Balloons, Soupwords and Pathwise. The game keeps track of how many times the player wins or loses a certain mini-game.

Expansions

Island Creator Kit

In August 2013, an island creator kit was made available for purchase. It is an activity book that walks the player through all the same steps the developers take when they make a new Island: coming up with a storyline, creating characters, and designing puzzles.

Poptropica Adventures

In 2012, in partnership with Ubisoft, Poptropica released a new video game for the Nintendo DS, titled Poptropica Adventures.[8]

Poptropica: Forgotten Islands

On September 5, 2013, Poptropica launched Poptropica: Forgotten Islands, an iOS game, which allows players to meet new characters and discover story elements about Poptropica by finding artifacts littered throughout the game. It was also released on the Nintendo 3DS system through Ubisoft in 2014.[9] It has been replaced on iOS with a mobile version of the desktop Poptropica game.

Poptropica Worlds

On January 11, 2017, Poptropica announced via their blog that they were introducing another game called Poptropica Worlds, developed in Unity. It was released in Spring 2017. Poptropica Worlds has new features, such as redesigned characters, customizable homes, and new Islands. Returning players are able to port over their avatar's look and name to Poptropica Worlds. Poptropica Worlds can be played on both the web and mobile. If membership was bought for Poptropica, it carries over to Poptropica Worlds, and vice versa.

Reality TV Island

Welcome to a world where everyone is addicted to television... and one show in particular. YOU will be on this show, competing for the grand prize, and Poptrickia is here to help you with it!

Reality Tv Island Poptropica 2019

Let's get this show on the road! Start by going left and into Mike's Market when you arrive in the island. Go right, past the carts, and wake up the guy reading. He'll zoom off the scene, leaving you alone with the tabloid. Collect it and examine it. Click on the Reality TV island application to tear it out. Then leave the store and head all the way right to TV Land. Go inside and click on any screen to switch the channel. Sit through the whole ad until it gives you the address: 123 Star Avenue, Hollywood. No need to memorize it; it's already written on your form. Now leave the building and head left to the Wayside Motel.
Once you're inside the motel office, you'll see a newspaper clipping on he wall. It'll say how much the famous Reality TV star Bucky Lucas likes pizza. Open up your tabloid again and go to the second page. Note the number for Papa Pete's Pizza. Go right and click on the telephone on the desk. Dial 555-PETE (or 555-7383.) Make sure to have it delivered to Motel Room 4B. Go outside, and you'll find the delivery boy has forgotten the room number. Offer to take the pizza, and he will be relieved he can go home and watch TV. Then knock on the door for apartment 4B (right next to the stairs on the left side.)

Go right, past the plasma-screen television, and into the second room. Talk to Bucky Lucas, and give him the pizza. Talk to him some more, and he will give you a stamp to mail in your application. Take out the form and enter whatever you want to in there. It doesn't have to make sense! Then go outside and all the way to the right of the island. Click on the mailbox to mail your application. The next day...
Hooray! You've made it onto the show! Climb into your personal helicopter, and then read the directions. Reality TV is a game full of things impossible in reality, but it's fun nonetheless! You are playing for seven days against seven six other contestants. Every day, you will play a different game, and whoever wins will be immune to being voted off that night. At the end of each day, you (and all the other contestants) will be able to vote someone off the show. If they get more votes than everybody, then they're off the show!
The last competition is different from the others because the winner of the game will be the winner of the tournament! On the second-last one, there's a guarantee that the person you chose will be voted off (but only if you win.) You will only have to play seven (half) of the following games in any one tournament. The games are quite simple and self-explanatory, and you can easily beat the island on your first try. But I have help and tips for all the challenges anyway...
  1. Balanced Diet [medium] As the brown dot (top of the pole) moves, move your cursor toward the opposite side of the circle to keep it centered. Avoid rapid movements, or the pole will topple! Keep your mouse inside the white guide circle.
  2. Boulder Push [easy] Just click as fast as you can; I can't help you much here! If you can, plug in as many USB computer mice you can find and then click all of them at the same time.
  3. Coconut Toss [hard] It's wiser to stay to the left of the area, where the coconuts are being chucked out. Focus more on collecting groups of three than the single ones, and avoid collecting bombs. Hop out of the fray when it gets too crazy, o else there will usually be too much competition!
  4. Geyser Guess [hard] This is just plain guessing, and I cannot help you at all here! Although statistically it's a good idea to move to the most recently erupted geyser or the geyser that has erupted the most so far, keep in mind that the same geyser can erupt twice in a row!
  5. Hang Glider [easy] Move your mouse outside of the game window, to the top, where the Poptropica logo and tabs are. Easy as pie. Note: using the Minimizer Store item will not help here.
  6. Knockout [medium] Always aim for the plate that is the least broken. Pull back about halfway for lower plates, and all the way to the bottom notch for the top row.
  7. Mountain Race [hard] Avoid the rocks as you run uphill. Running farther to the right (higher) is a great advantage, even if you get hit once or twice. Rather than ducking, keep your mouse above your player to be ready to jump and only move from side to side to avoid the falling ones.
  8. On the Line [medium] As soon as your line comes close to a fish's mouth, it'll be reeled in automatically. Or, you can time your click it so that it will rise in time to hit a fish, which you'll probably have to do. Shallow catches save lots of valuable time!
  9. Pole Climb [medium] Click and hold briefly to the right or left to dodge the falling coconuts. I recommend staying on either the leftmost two poles or the rightmost two poles. It can get tough when you are near the top, where coconuts fall unexpectedly and there is very little time to think!
  10. Shot Put [medium] Shoot for a 45-degree angle. Click again when the power meter is almost full.
  11. Shuffleboard [hard] Select a long shot (long arrow) for the first shot, or bank it sharply into one side to go around your opponents. Don't shoot too hard when you are close to the center. Another strategy is to kind of dance around the circle until your last turn, then drive it straight in.
  12. Turtle Shell Toss [easy] Aim for the center of the palm tree in the background to get 20 points every time.
  13. Totem Jump [medium] When a totem starts to shake, leap to another one! Avoid jumping to the tallest totem as you can get stuck there. It's wiser to jump on newer totems as they are less likely to topple early.
  14. Water Run [hard] Only jump off the boar-safe pedestals in the middle when the boar has passed and, whatever you do, avoid the boar! Try to fill your jug to the top every time.
The challenges do not necessarily have to happen in this order.
If you are near the end (the 6th or 7th day), and you come face-to-face with a tough game like Water Run or a guessing game like Geyser Guess, then you can reload the page or quit and restart the browser window in the middle of the hard challenge without saving. This will take you back to the day you were on before, and will give Poptropica a chance to pick another game for you. This can come in very handy sometimes! You can also beat this island more than once (I'm a 20-time winner!)
